Jackline placements

Hi Folks.

Has anyone here used jacklines on the 99 for offshore races or deliveries? If so, would be interested in hearing how you rigged them and whether you used existing attachment points or installed new padeyes.

Considering putting some padeyes into the cockpit to either allow for a jackline to be run down the center of the cockpit or for crew to tether to directly. Curious as to what other people have used for placements before we take a drill to the boat...

Hi Ben,

Yes we use use jacklines when racing offshore.  We rig them from the forward mooring cleats outside the shrouds to the aft mooring cleats.  The jacklines have an eye in each sewn in each end.  The forward end  we feed the jackline through itself around the middle of the cleat and back outside the shrouds to the after cleat.  The aft eye in the jackline is a foot or so short of the aft cleat.  It has a piece of spectra secured to it, so we wet the jackline and pull the spectra line tight and secure several wraps through the center of the cleat and tie it off around itself.  Works well and leaves the cleats free to use.  What boat do you own Ben?

I guess it is hull 74 Penelope, correct?

I run jacklines just as Rod suggests....cleat to cleat around the shrouds.

Yes, Rod, our boat is hull 74/Penelope. The sale process took a bit longer than anticipated in the current environment, but has finally gone through so we're planning on bringing her down the coast from Seattle to Portland at some point in the next few weeks. Looking forward to some sailing and a change of scenery...

I also use jacklines cleat to cleat.  However, I installed two folding padeyes as well.  One is on the cockpit floor behind the wheel for the helmsperson's use.  The other is on the starboard side of the cockpit for a crew's use.  There was easy access under the cockpit floor and inside the starboard locker to install a reinforcing backplate.

Jester ties 1" flat webbing material from the forward cleat to the rear cleat on each side outside the shrouds laying flat on the deck.   Flat webbing material is plenty strong and lays flat on the deck to avoid rolling ankles and confusion with a sheet.   Consider using brighter color easily discerned in low light conditions [e.g. yellow]



Yes good point ours are flat and yellow with blue stitching, strong enough to lift the boat.
